The Quest for the £20,000 Golf Balls
Dec 4th
Almost every golfer has at one point during a round heard the dreaded plop as the ball lands in the drink. Now, it may seem a little bit drastic but divers, in County Donegal, Northern Ireland, have gone to the extreme of getting on the diving gear to go searching for some golf balls in Lough Salt, near Kilmacrenan. However they’re not just any old golf balls, well they are old, but what makes them special is that they are rumoured to have been hit there by golfing legend Old Tom Morris. The man not only racked up the title of Open Champion a total of four times during the 1860’s, but he was also one of the men responsible for its existence in the first place. More >

Learning the Rules of Golf the Hard Way
Nov 7th
Almost certainly one of the strangest stories you will hear this year in golf. It involves a kid who goes by the name of Blayne Barber, who did something that can only happen in this ridiculous game. The story begins six days after Barber advanced to the second stage of the PGA Tour’s Q-School, when he called the tour and disqualified himself because of a dubious incident with a leaf in a bunker. The event occurred when Barber was unsure whether or not he had brushed a leaf in the sand trap on the 13th hole at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Georgia. He played the final two rounds as his caddie was sure the leaf hadn’t moved. “I continued to pray about it and think about it, and I just did not have any peace about it,” Barber said. “I knew I needed to do the right thing. I knew it was going to be disqualification.” More >

PGA Centenary Golf Course at Gleneagles
Oct 25th
The five star Gleneagles Hotel and Golf Resort has been something of a Mecca for golfers since it opened its doors and golf courses to the public in the 1920s. It quickly established itself as one of the finest luxury destinations in Scotland and golf at Gleneagles was once a “de rigueur” point of call for the bright young things of high society. It has hosted many important golf tournaments over the years and its place in golfing history has now been further recognised by virtue of being chosen as the venue for the 2014 Ryder Cup. More >

Swinley Forest Golf Club – Seriously Exclusive!
Oct 25th
A serious contender for the most exclusive course in the UK is Swinley Forest, located in the heart of Surrey–Berkshire Heathland, along with the famous Wentworth and Sunningdale golf courses. Not only is it probably one of the hardest courses in the UK to get on, it is also one of the purest examples of classic inland golf in all of Europe. The club is unashamedly exclusive, has always held a liberal attitude towards female members and has been run in the manner of a benevolent dictatorship. The fact that there are no compulsory handicaps, members are able to choose what they play off, this says a lot about the laid back attitude of the members in general. Perhaps controversial in terms of club management Swinley Forest has certainly made a name for itself in its unorthodox approach to the game. More >

Scottish Golf Breaks – Royal Dornoch Golf Club
Oct 15th
A couple of years back now I had entered what I thought to be a standard medal at my home course of Dunblane New Golf Club. However it wasn’t until I had completed a solid 18 holes with net score of 2 under had I realised that the competition was qualifying for a national event which consisted of two further competitions at both the Queens course at Gleneagles and one of the Northern most courses in Scotland, Royal Dornoch. Having played the Queens a few times before, it was always going to be Royal Dornoch that gave me a sense of excitement. As I had not played a ‘Royal Golf Course’ before it made the occasion one to savour. More >

Brandt Snedeker – FedEx Cup winner, now where to spend your $11.44 million
Sep 24th
Golf is a sport focussed on numbers, whether it is putts, greens in regulation or even distance hit off the tee. For Brandt Snedeker it was more a case of how many zeros could he add to his bank account following his victory at Bobby Jones’ old stomping ground East Lake Country Club in Atlanta, Georgia in the FedEx Cup. In holding off the likes of Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods and Justin Rose, Snedeker has not only raised his stock making him the man to beat at Medinah for the Ryder Cup but also saw him rise to a career high 10th in the World Rankings.
